AN END-TO-END SOLUTION TO PROVIDE LITERACY AND MATH TUTORS AND READING MENTORS FOR CHILDREN IN GRADES K-3 IN CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS.

In the fall of 2017, a joint initiative was formed between Read Charlotte, United Way of Central Carolinas, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and community partners to provide a countywide system of high-quality tutoring.

The initiative began with our Reading Mentors program in six CMS schools serving over 200 children. For the upcoming school year, Tutor Charlotte is focusing on expanding our Reading Mentors program to more schools and classrooms and will also offer additional quality tutoring opportunities.

What’s the difference between a reading mentor and a tutor?

Mentors

Tutor Charlotte Reading Mentors read 30 minutes weekly using the Active Reading model in a designated classroom with an assigned student. Volunteers participate in an Active Reading training and utilize the Active Reading model in their weekly reading.

Tutors

Tutors are individuals who want to give more of their time through intensive structured tutoring in literacy or math. This includes volunteering through organizations such as Augustine Literacy Project (ALP), Heart Math Tutoring (HMT), or with the HELPS fluency focused tutoring program led by Read Charlotte.

Quarterly Training

To support our community’s dedicated volunteers, tutors and mentors, Tutor Charlotte offers quarterly training sessions with topics ranging from how to keep students engaged in reading to the effects of trauma on children to cultural competency.
