AN END-TO-END SOLUTION TO PROVIDE LITERACY AND MATH TUTORS AND READING MENTORS FOR CHILDREN IN GRADES K-3 IN CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS.

HIGH QUALITY, ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING IS ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN WITH READING AND MATH.

Tutors are individuals who want to give more of their time through intensive structured tutoring in literacy or math. This includes volunteering through agencies such as Augustine Literacy Project (ALP), Heart Math Tutoring (HM), or with the HELPS fluency focused tutoring program.

Augustine Literacy Project

Augustine Literacy Project offers a robust tutoring opportunity focused on improving the reading, spelling and writing skills of children in grades 1-3 with the greatest literacy needs in under-resourced communities.

HELPS (Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies)

is an evidence-based literacy intervention to improve children’s fluency and reading comprehension skills. This highly structured intervention can be used by trained tutor volunteers, paraprofessionals and teachers to improve children’s reading fluency.

Read Charlotte is providing HELPS training for tutors who want to volunteer in this specific tutoring role. Tutors will work directly with 3rd graders who need support with fluency. Volunteers will donate at least one hour a week to work in their selected school. Identified schools in Read Charlotte’s Transformation Network are implementing HELPS.
